Best Residential IP and Proxy Provider: The Ultimate Proxies to Use in 2023

The proxy market is constantly changing, every year we see new type of proxies appearing. Originally there were just proxies now we have datacenter proxies, rotating proxies, residential proxies, e-commerce proxies and lots and lots of variants. What’s worse is often the providers simply make up these terms and assign them to whatever proxy they have for sale. The market is full of cheap proxy providers with servers that are little better than the hacked, free servers you see online.

What’s the Difference Between Proxy Services ?

Fundamentally most proxy servers are pretty similar. The software that runs them is mostly the same, it’s not terribly difficult to set up the basic functionality. However that’s where the similarities stop, in practice the vast majority of proxies will cause the user more harm than good. Generally because of one very crucial difference which separates the best proxies from the useless rubbish.

So what’s the most crucial aspect of a proxy? Why do some cost a small fortune compared to all the free ones you can find online. Well it’s mostly to do with the IP addresses they use.

Best Proxies Use Residential IP Addresses

There’s absolutely no doubt about this. If your proxy is using a residential IP address then you’re going to be pretty much completely anonymous and safe from filtering and blocking other proxies can actually cause. This means that your IP address is registered to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and is allocated to normal users surfing the internet. No website is ever going to block these sorts of addresses as they are used by the vast majority of home internet connections – i.e. customers.

Remember a proxy is effectively a disguise, an alternative identity which you can use online. The IP address that the proxy uses is that identity and it hugely effects your experience online. You can change country by using a proxy.  If you use a proxy that utilizes a commercial IP address used by spammers, hackers and crooks online then you’re not going to have a great time. It will cause problems and issues whatever you do with it especially if it’s on one of the many blacklists shared over the web.

It’s like assuming the identity of a wanted criminal when you want to keep a low profile.

Everywhere you go, everything you do, every account you use is going to be tainted by this IP address. Of course this is an extreme example, most IP addresses are just pretty ordinary but they do have other aspects which are vital to consider. For instance to keep a low profile, a really important factor is where and how the address is registered and classified.

IP Address Classification

There are lots of options here but the main classifications are based on things like commercial, educational, government and residential. So if your IP address is classified as educational then the implication is that the user is from a college, school or University network.

The vast majority of IP addresses used by proxies are actually classified as commercial. This is because they’re the only ones which are readily available to the proxy providers. So if you sign up to a standard proxy plan for a datacenter proxy then this is the most likely IP address you’ll be assigned.

Commercial IP Addresses

There’s nothing wrong with an IP address from a commercially registered range. They work perfectly well and technically there is no real difference from other valid IP address ranges. The problem is that websites will know that they originate from some sort of corporate network or datacenter.

So if you want to root out bots, automated connections, proxies or VPNs then filtering commercial IP address ranges is an easy way to do it. Of course, it’s not quite as clear cut as this after all how many millions of ordinary people use their internet connections at work – these will all be from commercial IP address ranges. Nevertheless, it’s a huge identifier for proxies and VPNs which many websites are very keen to detect for aa variety of reasons.

SO if your proxy is using commercial IP addresses then it’s easy to detect you’re using a proxy or VPN.

Residential IP Addresses

If you want to keep a low profile and not raise any flags then you need to look like an ordinary surfer. To do this you really need either a mobile or residential IP address. Mobile addresses are those assigned to the mobile phone network and you’ll find these sold as mobile proxies (surprisingly enough!). These work well but often the quality of these IP addresses can be quite poor. The other option is of course, residential IP addresses.

These are assigned by Internet Service Providers to customers via their home connections. They’re literally the safest, most trusted IP addresses available as they should only be available to ordinary home users via their broadband contracts. Of course the reason why they’re trusted also makes it difficult to get enough of them to use by proxy providers.

How Do Proxy Providers Get Residential IP Addresses ?

It’s important to understand these methods because it directly influences the quality and performance of the various residential proxies that are available. After all in theory these IP addresses should be completely unavailable to proxy companies.

Manual Lease/Setups

The original method pioneered by companies like Storm Proxies was to simply set up standard internet/broadband accounts. You could then access the residential addresses as paying customers. Some ISPs will let you have additional IP addresses for a small surcharge.

As long as these connections remained on the IP addresses could be forwarded for use in a residential proxy network. Sometimes the companies would do this directly or pay for home users to set the connections up for them. It was obviously expensive and time consuming although the residential IP addresses were top quality. Obviously this is not a service that could be supplied at a very low cost though.

Hacked/Malware Networks

As the value of residential proxies started to rise then it became a much more tempting target for online criminals. Of course, huge networks already existed for DDOS and DOS attacks containing mostly home users who’d inadvertently downloaded viruses or malware onto their computers.

Many of these Botnets were now used to provide very low quality residential proxy networks. Of course if you used these you were effectively routing your connection through a virus riddled home computer which had been hacked. The IP addresses in these networks were completely abused and many ended up on blacklists.

Software/APK Lease

This is the legitimate version of the hacked residential networks. Users were given access to free software or applications in exchange for access to users home connections. The proxy providers were able to utilise these home connections to create huge residential IP networks which could be used by their proxies.

These home connections were completely legitimate and thus very valuable to proxy providers. This method was pioneered by companies like Luminati/Bright Data who have proxy networks with millions of residential IP addresses. The disadvantage of this method is that they have no direct control over the IP addresses which could be turned off at any moment. It means your IP address could change at any second. The other issue was often of performance as the proxy connection needed to be routed through people’s home computers which could be quite slow.

ISP Proxies – Directly Registered

If you see ISP proxies advertised then potentially you’ve found the very best residential proxy that is available. They might also be listed as static residential proxies by some companies. So what’s so special?

ISP proxies don’t rely on shared or borrowed IP addresses, they use genuine residential IP address ranges registered directly from a company with a trusted network ASN.

This has loads of benefits, here’s some of the main ones –

  • IP address is not shared with other users
  • IP address is registered and controlled directly (so doesn’t disappear without warning!)
  • Can be hosted exclusively on fast datacenter servers.
  • IP address is anonymous and safe to use.

Basically it combines all the performance and availability of datacenter proxies with the anonymity of residential proxies. Increasingly these are the proxies the professionals are using for all sorts of online activities. The only drawback is that they’re slightly more expensive than standard residential proxies using traditional methods of harvesting IP addresses.

The Best Residential Proxy Provider

If you’re looking for the ultimate in anonymity, performance and quality then of course you need an ISP proxy. However remember they can be quite expensive and often this expense cannot be justified. Don’t pay through the nose for expensive ISP proxies if you don’t really need them,

Technically these IP addresses should not be available to proxy providers, so don’t expect smaller companies to be able to make these sort of deals. Be extremely careful of many proxy companies who try and label standard residential proxies as being direct from ISP

Bright Data/Luminati

Here’s our favorite proxy provider for serious work. They’re not the cheapest but definitely the safest to use if you want make money with proxies, there’s so many dodgy proxy companies out there that sometimes it’s best to stay with the serious companies.

Don’t worry about using them for any sort of task though. As long as it’s not illegal there’s no problem, certainly fine for things like sneakers and tickets for example. If you are after sneakers a cheaper alternative is IPBurger who many successful sneakerheads use.

Finding Decent ISP – Residential Proxies

The market for ISP proxies is relatively new, there’s literally only a couple of companies who provide genuine ISP proxies at the moment. There are lots of fake ones though so be careful – it’s usually safer to stick with larger companies in this particular sector. Smaller companies can set up decent datacentre proxies fairly easily they are not going to be able to negotiate with ISPs and telecoms companies to obtain large number of residential IP ranges.

The main decision you need to make is if you actually need the best residential proxy or whether one of the cheaper alternatives would be sufficient,

Ask for A Static IP

The simplest way to differentiate between ordinary residential proxies and ISP proxy services is that you have little control over IP addresses. If a provider can’t guarantee you keep the same IP address then it’s very likely a traditional rotating residential proxy.

Sneaker, Ticket, E-commerce Sites

Generally anything which the potential to generate large profits is worth using ISP proxies on. Most e-commerce sites will look for residential IP addresses as a simple check. Location is also crucial with these sorts of transactions, IP addresses from the wrong country will rarely work well irrespective of whether they’re residential or not.

Geo-Targeting Options

It’s becoming increasingly important in many transactions to ensure that the IP address you’re connected with is from the right location. So if you’re doing business in the US then you need a US IP address, UK will need a British address and so on. Sites like Craigslist are obviously very sensitive to the IP location but there are lots of other sites which check too.

You won’t have much success on sneaker sites for example if you use IPs from another country. Not only will they often be too slow, but they’ll often be blocked by default. Some e-commerce servers will also try to ensure financial information matches the location too.
